Lesbian North Dakota Councilwoman Puts Homophobe Where He Belongs

Carrie Evans is a North Dakota councilwoman that recently went viral for shutting down a gay-hating person during a council meeting.

Evans is the first openly lesbian elected official to serve in North Dakota, and some people seem to be bothered by that. As it turns out, some residents of her town Minot and neighboring areas took issue with the rainbow flag that was raised in front of City Hall to celebrate Pride for a week, and it resulted in a number of complaints. Evans and the rest of the council listened to a plethora of gay-hating comments, Bible verses, and hate directed at the town’s LGBTQ+ population.

One man took it to stage to complain about it, but Evans had the absolute perfect response to it.

The video has since been shared thousands of times across social media, and you’ll see why.

As Evans was speaking, the man said that he had ‘heard enough’ of it. Mayor Shaun Sipma told him that he did not have that kind of Authority, and Evans continued:

“I am proudly the first openly elected lesbian in North Dakota. So that is why I’m not paying any heed to your crap. ‘We the people?’ I’m the people. I live in Minot. I am a taxpayer. I am a person.”

She used the moment to remind the man and every other gay-hating person that was standing there that other groups have also raised flags at City Hall throughout the year, including flags in honor of POWs.

“We are not some group of people who live in San Francisco or Seattle. We are here. We are your elected officials, we are your brothers, we are your sisters. And don’t tell me you’re not hatred and anger. That’s all I feel. I’ve had to listen to it for days now, as has the mayor and many of my colleagues. It is unacceptable.” – she noted.

Yes, it most certainly is unacceptable, and as she notes, the city, like every other, is big enough for all of us!

As she puts it, we’re sorry that who we are doesn’t make some people feel comfortable, but we’re here, and we’re not going away!
