President Joe Biden announced an anti-discrimination executive order in his first days of the presidency that some belief will force schools to include trans athletes in girls’ sports. The order has been titled Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation, and it was signed just a few hours after Biden assumed office.
The order states that children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports.
Additionally, the order says that it is the policy of Biden’s administration to prevent and combat discrimination.
The president claims that such policies are ‘enshrined in the nation’s anti-discrimination laws’ and they align with a Supreme Court ruling of 2020 that prohibits ‘discrimination on the basis of someone’s gender identity’.
Some critics, however, began to speculate that schools will now have funding pulled if they do not allow trans female athletes to compete in girls’ sports.
The president’s order has already divided feminist and LGBT activists on the internet. Although the order has been cheered by trans rights proponents, others say that the order could unintentionally discriminate against cis girls.
According to journalist Abigail Shrier, Biden unilaterally eviscerated women’s sports.
‘Any educational institution that receives federal funding must admit biologically-male athletes to women’s teams, women’s scholarships, etc. A new glass ceiling was just placed over girls.’ – she added.
The hashtag #BidenErasedWomen started trending on Twitter soon after, and it became a back-and-forward conversation between LGBT activists and feminists. While the first claim that the order was simply Biden’s attempt at moving towards a more inclusive society, the other say that the decision is wrong and discriminatory against cis women.
