China’s President Calls For a Ban On ‘Sissy Men’ That ‘Aren’t Masculine Enough For TV’

The Chinese President Xi Jinping recently called for ‘a national rejuvenation’, and it was partically centered on removing ‘effeminate’ men from broadcast TV. Yes, you read that right.

Reuters reports that China’s TV regulator said that broadcasters will have to ‘resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal aesthetics’. They used the term ‘niang pao’, which is a term that translates to ‘girlie guns’.

All of these restrictions are a part of a broader institutional power grab by the government ruled by President Jinping. On top of that, it’s clear that his administration looks for a stronger cultural influence in the country.

The ‘update’ encouraged male Chinese celebrities not to wear makeup, appear more ‘masculine’, and avoid the aesthetic of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese popstars.
