Twitter Reacts To ‘Sigma Male’ Theory Against the Old-Fashioned ‘Alpha Male’

We’ve all heard about the ‘alpha’ male, and we’re kind of tired of it.
Thus, a new classification of manly men was born: ‘The Sigma Male’. Twitter user @LilySimpson1312 recently shared a viral Twitter post in which she introduced the world with the existence of the ‘sigma male’, alongside some hierarchy charts about this particular category of men. Additionally, she shared a screengrab of a video title ‘How to become Sigma male – Rarest Male Type’, and a photo of the self-help book The Sigma Male.

What’s going on with men, really?

Forbes writes that the traditional characterization of men consists of two types: the alpha male, which is the dominant type, and the submissive type – the beta male. This theory is based on the wolf packs that are ruled by aggressive leaders, known as alpha wolves. Even though this theory has been debunked numerous times, the concept of the elusive ‘alpha male’ has stayed in popular culture for a long, long time. Although most of us have been ignoring the existence of this theory, right-wing writer Theodore Robert Beale leaned into the theory quite heavily.

The author, who has been described as a white supremacist and misogynist (among other things), created a socio-sexual hierarchy, in which he categorized men as either alphas, sigmas, betas, deltas, gammas, and even omegas – based on their social position with other males and their ability to attract women.
As it turns out, Day himself considers himself to be a sigma male. According to him, alphas and sigmas are considered equal as top dogs, but the latter is someone who decides to sit outside the hierarchy by choice. Wow.

This is how the sigma male was described in a 2010 blog post:

“The outsiders who don’t play the social game and manage to win at it anyhow. The alphas hate sigmas because they are the only men who don’t accept or at least acknowledge their social dominance. (NB: Alphas absolutely hate to be laughed at and a sigma can enrage an alpha by simply smiling at him.) Everyone else is vaguely confused by them. At the party, it’s the guy who stops by to say hello to a few friends accompanied by a tier-one girl that no one has ever seen before. Sigmas often like women, but also tend to be contemptuous of them.”

The debate was started once again on Twitter, and in 2021, we’re having absolutely none of this BS! This is how Twitter users reacted to the initial tweet that gained a lot of popularity on social media:
